OBITUARY: Harley Herman Stigge

Harley Stigge, 88, died peacefully Monday, March 31, at the UIHC in Palliative and Hospice Care, with family by his side.

Private services will be held at a later date.

Harley was born March 10, 1926 in Howells, Nebraska, the son of Herman and Auguste Beune Stigge. He was a graduate of Wisner High School, attended St. Mary's College in Winona, Minnesota and the Webb Institute of Technology in New York, New York. He received his bachelors degree from Midland Lutheran College in Fremont, Nebraska in 1988. He was a U.S. Navy Aviation Cadet from 1944 to 1947. On June 28, 1952, Harley married Gloria Bohlmann at St. John’s Lutheran Church in LaGrange, Illinois. 

Harley was a bookkeeper at Stigge Machine and Supply, a Cuming County Assessor in West Point, Nebraska, a Dodge County Deputy Assessor and a parts salesman at International Harvester/Flynn and Larson in Fremont, Nebraska. After retiring and moving to Iowa City, he did professional scoring at NCS-Pearson. Harley spent most of his life reading and studying a variety of mathematics and science topics. He liked helping people, telling stories and jokes, and visiting with everyone he met.

Harley is survived by his wife Gloria and his three daughters: Alexis Stigge of Iowa City, Laurel (Robert) Novotny of Omaha, Nebraska, and Alyson (Ronald) Lamb of Mount Airy, Maryland. His grandchildren were his pride and joy: Andrea Berger of Rochester, Minnesota, Nicholas Muhle and Jonathan Novotny of Omaha, Nebraska, Katherine Novotny of Los Angeles, California, Elizabeth Lamb of Metuchen, New Jersey, and Alexander Lamb of Seattle, Washington. He enjoyed reminiscing with family, nieces and nephews, classmates, coworkers, and friends throughout his years. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and one sister.
