OBITUARY: Clarence E. Sewell, Jr.

Clarence E. Sewell, Jr, 87 of Iowa City, passed away at Mercy Hospital on Tuesday April 1, 2014, surrounded by his loving family.

His family will greet friends Saturday from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service in Iowa City.

Memorials may be directed to the Iowa City Veterans Administration Medical Center.

Clarence was born on November 18, 1926. He was raised in Omaha, Nebraska. When he was 17, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served during the Second World War. He later enlisted in the Army and served in the Korean War.

Clarence was an inventor and entrepreneur, and a real estate broker and developer. He was a man ahead of his time in many ways, enjoying new and challenging business ventures like gold & coal mining, drilling for oil, solar and hydrogen energy solutions and many other interesting endeavors.

Clarence was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and ushered for many years on Sunday mornings. He was a wonderfully attentive father and husband. He spent countless hours building play structures for school and home, pitching wiffle balls, attending softball games and carrying shopping bags.

Clarence was immensely proud of his grandson Logan, even feeding him his first bottle. He taught Logan the (sometimes) questionable art of story-telling, passing on his love of history, whittling, shooting and fishing.

Survivors include his daughters Lisa Crawford and her son Logan Crawford and Cerina Wade and her husband Patrick Wade.

He was preceded in death by his wife Kathryn, parents, two sisters and one brother.
