Char was born on June 5, 1950 in Iowa City, the daughter of Jack and Lou Chehak Canney. Char worked at Potentially Yours Thrift Store and attended Reach For Your Potential Adult Day Center. She loved to work!
Char was a member of St. Wenceslaus Church, Iowa City Reach For the Stars Kiwanis Aktion Club, the West Music Sound Reach Choir and the Iowa City Recreation SPI Program. Char had great courage and was an inspiration to many. She was known for her infectious laugh, welcoming smile, great sense of humor and wit.
Char loved to participate in Special Olympic Events where she enjoyed bowling and cheerleading. She also liked cooking and crafts. As we celebrate the July 4th holiday we also celebrate Char’s life and the many lives she touched. What a mission of love, life and a “can-do” attitude she modeled! Char’s favorite saying was, “I’m Happy All the Way” and her favorite song was “If You’re Happy and You Know It”

The family extends their sincere appreciation and gratitude to the Reach staff, caregivers and friends, Iowa City Hospice, especially her nurse Deb and Dr. Craig Champion for the compassionate and loving care shown to Char. Her footprints have been left on the hearts of many and she will be greatly missed.

Char leaves behind her loving sisters, Diane (Roy) Rios of North Liberty and Dee (John) Aupperle of Iowa City; nieces and nephews, Jennifer (Kelly) Erickson, Justin (Angie) Rios and Nick Aupperle; and extended family.

Char was preceded in death by her parents, grandparents, and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
