OBITUARY: Barbara Olson

Barbara Olson, 63, died unexpectedly on the morning of Tuesday, June 17, 2014.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, June 21st from 1-3 p.m. at Motley Cow Café -- 160 North Linn Street, Iowa City. Please come join us as we enjoy all of our wonderful memories of Barbara.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Barbara Olson Memorial Fund -- P.O. Box 5312, Coralville, IA 52241.

Barbara was born June 1, 1951 in Ames, Iowa, the daughter of Arnold Alvin and Norma Jean Bartels (Prather). She graduated from Iowa City West High school in 1969, and later from the University of Iowa - School of Social Work. She married Douglas Olson on July 26, 1975 in Tiffin, Iowa. Barbara was also a 50 year Coralville American Legion Auxiliary member. 

Barbara was excellent with children which resulted in a lifetime career in social work and family services. She was employed by Young House Family Services, the University of Iowa, and Parents as Teachers. Through her undeniable dedication and patience she touched the lives of many families.

Barbara was a compassionate, loving and cheerful person who always put others first. She was a devoted wife and mother and was a pillar in her family. Barbara enjoyed running, water skiing, biking, pilates, yoga, crocheting and snow skiing. She was known in the community for her THKSNO license plates. She also enjoyed traveling, spending time with her friends and family and especially her granddaughters, Savannah and Sofia, who were her joy in life. Her beautiful smile and positive spirit will always be missed. 

Barbara is survived by her husband Doug, of North Liberty (39 years of marriage on July 26, 2014); her daughter Michelle (Edward) and their children, Savannah and Sofia, of Chicago; mother, Norma, of Iowa City; brothers, Max of Iowa City, Scott (Mia) of Coralville, and Steve (Judi) of North Liberty.

Barbara was preceded in death by her father.
