How to Totally Eliminate Flood Damage

Now is a good time to review the basics about floods.

There are three basic rules that can totally eliminate flood damage. All of them read: "Don't locate homes and other structures in flood plains."

We can also substantially reduce the runoff that is the source of a goodly portion of flood waters by taking a lesson from how Iowa controlled floods 200 years ago. When Iowa was covered with trees and prairie grasses, rain was absorbed. When we cut down the trees, plowed up the prairie, and replaced some of the land with paved roads and parking lots, we increased and sped up that runoff.
