I Sold Kelly Clarkson's DNA on eBay (BLOG)

What does the used water bottle of a singing star have to do with real estate?

You might be wondering what Kelly Clarkson's DNA has to do with real estate. Well, I am gonna tell you.

In the Spring of 2005, my wife and I went to see Kelly Clarkson in concert in Omaha. As you know, I am a big concert guy, and I had front row seats for the show, so we drove over to have a good time. When we got there, I discovered that not only did we have front row seats, but they were front row, CENTER, and these seats were VERY close to the stage.

At a venue like Wells Fargo, there is usually a barrier or something between the front row and the stage, but at this particular venue, that was not the case. The concert was at the Omaha Music Hall which seats about 2500 people and is an intimate venue. When we sat down with our beers, I could literally set my beer on the stage directly in front of me. Kelly's microphone was no more than five feet away from my seat.

I will be honest with you, being THAT CLOSE is a little strange. Kelly looked right at me a lot that night, I like to think it had something to do with how good I looked, but it was probably more to do with not being able to avoid looking at someone directly in front of you, swaying to your tunes as you sing them.

After a few songs, Kelly reached down and opened a bottled water and took a drink. I remember quite clearly that it was the only drink she took all night.

Eventually the concert ended, Kelly took her bows, and the roadies came out to clear the stage. I asked the guy who was working on her microphone if I could have the water bottle at his feet. He reached down and handed me one of two that were sitting there. He actually gave me the one she never touched. He must of thought it was quite strange when I asked him for the opened one instead, but he obliged.

My wife Katie, who knows me so well, immediately said, "you are going to sell that, aren't you."

I simply nodded in agreement.

After arriving home, I got on Ebay and started typing out a description. I knew marketing it as a simple water bottle would not be the best way to go, so I opted to describe it as a chance to own Kelly Clarkson's DNA since her lips had touched the bottle.

The next day, I got a call from my sister asking if I was the Ebay seller being referenced by People magazine in their online edition. I told her I had no idea and went to check it out. That article is right HERE

The auction started gaining traction, I believe the bid got up to around $50 or so and then Ebay stepped in. I got a message from them saying that they were ending the auction because I had violated their policy against SELLING BODY PARTS!

So, I started a new auction where I removed mention of her DNA and listed it simply as a water bottle. Not quite as sexy but it did end up selling for 20 something dollars. Not bad for a used water bottle!

So, what in the world does this have to do with real estate?

In real estate, there are a lot of issues and challenges that come up, and working with a creative agent can be the difference between success and failure.
When it comes time to work with an agent yourself, would you rather work with the agent who sees a used water bottle as trash, or one who views it as opportunity?

This creativity unveils itself in many different forms like marketing, negotiations, or finding a way to make a deal make sense. It is important to work with someone who thinks outside the box.

How do the agents you know view a used water bottle?
