These Two Young Bicyclists Met on RAGBRAI 2013: Scott Taylor and Amanda Knutson

A young cyclist from the Killer Bee Team, Scott Taylor, stopped to talk to another young bicyclist who stopped beside the road on RAGBRAI 2013. Amanda Knutson now wears his Killer Bee cap and Scott Taylor now lives in her hometown, Cedar Rapids.

I think you'll agree they both look quite happy with the arrangement.

We met them while sitting on the porch of Baxa's Sutliff Store & Tavern, which overlooks the Sutliff Bridge, now restored and preserved with new planks, a safe fence on either side to keep children and pets from falling over the side, picnic benches, and a magnificent view of the Cedar River.

If there's a prettier place in Johnson County, I don't know where it is. Grant Wood hills surround the Cedar River. There's only one stark McMansion with a three-car garage on a stripped-bare hill to mar the view. Developers are trying to plunder this beautiful countryside close to Baxa's and the Sutliff Bridge. We must hold the line.

By the way, if you go to Baxa's in Sutliff, be sure to bring cash or a check. They don't take plastic. I had enough cash to buy Jim two beers and me one hard lemonade (they don't have hard liquor but do serve wine).

The lit-up bar sign inside has an "Absolutely no charging -- warning" sign attached. There's another sign that says, "Spandex is a privilege not a right," and the owner clearly respects that sign because he does not serve beer, food, or anything else in Spandex. Neither does his staff.

We have it on good authority that Red's Alehouse is expanding in nearby Solon. We think we saw the building where it's going to be. Is it where Joensy's used to be? Apparently, according to Paul Deaton, Joensy's closed in August 2012.
