Dine out for Education Day is September 13, 2012; funds go to ICCSD Foundation for school enhancements

Dine out for Education Day is Sept. 13th. Profits go directly to the ICCSD Foundation, which supports programs like the Farm to School Program, which adds healthy food to school lunches.

The school district's foundation, managed by Victoria Gilpin, scheduled the next Dine out for Education day for Sept. 13th. Apparently, the foundation gives excellence fund grants to programs that are exciting and constructive, like the Farm to School Program run by Heather Widmere. The Farm to School Program connects food and families. Kids are growing gardens and tasting the fruits of their labor, food like zucchini and red peppers cooked by Dave Bert of the former Red Avocado restaurant.

Since the school district's foundation funds are unrestricted, according to Ms. Gilpin, the money doesn't go directly to school district administration. Therefore, I think the Dine out for Education Day Sept. 13th is a worthy event we all should participate in. You can find a list of restaurants participating in the Dine Out for Education Day on the foundation's website.

Ms. Gilpin said that last year the program raised $17,000. The next Dine out for Education Day after Sept. 13, 2012 will be March 7, 2013.
