A Look Back At The Dey House

Photographs of the Dey House

As the prestige of the Writer's Workshop at the University of Iowa increased, so did the funding.

The historic 1857 Victorian-style building on Clinton St. is home to the program and not so many years back went under renovations and an expansion which involved an additional, connected building.  The addition was named the Glenn Schaeffer Library and is more than three times the size of the Dey House.  Keeping the original Dey House as part of the final product rather than redoing the entire location of the Writer's Workshop helps to keep the character of the location and reminds people of the deep roots the program has in this city.

The connecting indoor walkway between the historic Dey House and the contemporary architectural Glenn Schaeffer Library could symbolize a bridge between the past and the future, allowing those to easily recollect the old and the new.  Below are links to prints of the Dey House from the early 1900's, I have additionally posted photographs of the construction of the library as well as my own photographs of the Dey House and library today.
