Community Corner

Brian Kirschling Running for School Board

My wife and I both grew up in Iowa City and we chose to raise our family here because of the schools and the way people respect hard work, fairness and honesty. (We’re also both rabid Hawkeye Fans!)

As Iowa City natives, we have seen the direct symbiotic relationship between development and schools over the years. Both City and West High were “out in the middle of nowhere” when they were built. Miles of development followed in both cases.

The ICCSD faces many critical decisions over the next few years. It is time to move forward and to build upon the great education tradition within the district while keeping an eye toward the future. We have to commit to healthy, high-performance 21st Century classrooms that will prepare our graduates for any avenue. We must also commit to preserving our tradition of excellence at our current facilities.

It is easy to get caught up in the minutiae of the moment while engaged in discussions about the schools. However, year after year, we continue to produce high-caliber, tech-savvy, critical thinkers that are well prepared for the next chapter of their lives. THAT should be our focus.

As a public school district, we need to double down on ensuring ALL of our kids throughout the district get equal opportunities to succeed. We also owe it to the community to be fiscally responsible with the funds they have entrusted to the school district.

The ICCSD gave me all the tools to succeed and the most influential educators in my life were found here in Iowa City. I would like to be a part of our unwavering unique commitment to public education. The decisions made now will affect the face of the community for generations.

I ask for your support this September.   Please check out my blog at http://kirschlingforboard.blogspot.com/ or my Facebook Page  "Kirschling for School Board
