Details: Detours, diversions, dalliances and dodges: Censorship and its circumventions in China with guest speaker Judy Polumbaum, UI Professor of Mass Communications & Journalism. Judy Polumbaum has studied Chinese media for three decades. She will describe China's censorship traditions and mechanisms and offer thoughts on how and why they sometimes work and sometimes don't work. 
The Intellectual Freedom Festival at the Iowa City Public Library is an annual event that affirms everyone's right to freedom of thought and expression. All programs are free and open to the public.

Details: In conjunction with "Works-in- Progress," UI festival that will 'provide artists with a forum for presenting works-in-progress to a discerning, yet sympathetic, public,' this panel raises basic questions about the mechanisms of creative work: how does one begin, and how does one know when to stop? Details: A Better Life (2011) Directed by Chris Weitz (Twilight: New Moon) and starring Demián Bichir, and José Julián. Carlos is an undocumented Mexican immigrant who works as a gardener in in LA and is raising his 15 year old son alone. He keeps a low profile, works hard and holds traditional values. His son Luis has grown up in LA, and is tempted by the gang lifestyle, but Carlos will do whatever he can to keep Luis from the gangs and give him the opportunities that he never had.
This film is shown in conjunction with the 14th Annual Iowa Latino Conference.
