Iowa City Scrabble Fundraiser Spells Food for the Hungry

(Iowa City, IA) — July 15, 2013 — As part of the 15th Annual Thanksgiving in July Community-Wide Food Drive, The Crisis Center is holding a Scrabble Fundraiser to help reach their goal of 90,000 pounds of food. This benefit will be held on Thursday, July 18 from 6:00 - 9:00 pm at The Kirkwood Room located at 515 Kirkwood Avenue in Iowa City.

The Crisis Center will provide Scrabble game boards for friendly competition. Attendees can choose to bring friends or be partnered with other players. All skill levels are welcome.Attendees are encouraged to register at http://crisiscenterscrabble.eventbrite.com/ to secure their spot. Admission is a $10 donation, which can be paid at the door, or made online prior to the event at www.jccrisiscenter.org. Refreshments will be available and door prizes will be given away. 

“We are really excited to be holding this fundraiser for the first time,” commented Sandy Pickup, Development Coordinator at The Crisis Center. “Scrabble is a great game. Plus, with each Scrabble player’s $10 donation, this will contribute 40 pounds of food to help our neighbors in need.”

Participation in this Thanksgiving in July event, sponsored by The Kirkwood Room, will help The Crisis Center Food Bank stock their shelves at the time of year when donations are at their lowest. The Food Bank serves more than 800 Johnson County families each week.

The Crisis Center has been serving residents of Johnson County since 1970. In addition to food pantry services, the organization offers crisis intervention counseling, suicide prevention and intervention, supplemental food services, emergency financial assistance, disaster recovery and other community programs.
