Lee Hermiston and Emily Schettler of the Iowa City Press-Citizen did a nice project looking into outstanding warrants in Johnson County. Hermiston examined why there are several warrants for defendants who have failed to show up for their court dates. Schettler, who has since moved on to the Des Moines Register, wrote a story capsules with different offenders with outstanding warrants. Hermiston also writes about how local law enforcement is going to try to whittle this list down.

Hermiston was at an ethics hearing for a University of Iowa radiologist who fellow employees say they were afraid of.

Adam Sullivan of the Press-Citizen writes that some Iowa City locals don't feel the president went far enough in his immigration decision Friday. James Q. Lynch of the Gazette writes that Iowa Republicans argue that he went too far, in fact they argue what he did wasn't legal.

Lynch also writes that Iowa's GOP candidates feel they have a good chance to win this fall.

Defense attorney Peter Persaud said that if a client misses a court appointment and a warrant is issued, there are options to get that fixed. When applicable, the attorney can file a written arraignment or a written plea and have the warrant recalled. Written pleas aren’t acceptable in felony cases, however.

Persaud said defense attorneys are not responsible for keeping tabs on clients who miss their appointments.

“We don’t track them down,” he said. “We notify them about their court dates. We’re not bounty hunters. If they have no contact with us, we don’t keep chasing them.”

Persaud said Johnson County has a reputation of being understanding if someone misses a hearing because of illness or simply forgets the hearing.
