ICAD has been developing its CoLab concept for the past few years and more recently has been gathering start-up support from public and private entities and searching for the right space, which would be located downtown and also would house ICAD’s administrative office. The city’s economic development committee — which includes Mayor Matt Hayek and council members Susan Mims and Michelle Payne — unanimously approved the request Tuesday. It now will go to the Iowa City Council for a vote.

“The reality is, in this economy, I think we have to take some risk in that regard to see if we can’t actually create some real opportunities for some start-ups to occur,” Iowa City Manager Tom Markus said in offering his support for providing the CoLab funding.
