Gregg Hennigan of the Gazette reports that a local panel that met Wednesday said more could be done to improve the treatment of minorities in the Iowa City school system.

People at a panel discussion on the black community in Iowa City Wednesday night said they believed children of color are treated differently in local schools.

No one explicitly said racism was to blame, but several people said it was a matter of school officials not knowing how to deal with black youth, having lowered expectations and not teaching black culture.

“I don’t think that we encourage African-American children as much as we encourage other children to be successful,” said Kenya Badgett, who has a son at City High School.
