For the people who have had Loebsack as their congressman for the past six years, the knowledge that he grew up in poverty in Sioux City, with a mother with mental health issues, might not be new.

But this year, Loebsack is having to introduce himself to a lot of new potential constituents, including in the Quad-Cities. So when he speaks to groups, he often touches on his upbringing — how an extended family helped to raise him, how he depended on Social Security survivor benefits to get through college.

It is, he says, a past that’s woven into who he is and why he fights to keep in place the new health insurance law that will mean coverage for millions of people. And it’s why he objects to the prospect of changes to Medicare and Social Security.
