One of the oldest bridges in Iowa City, Rochester Avenue Bridge was much overdue for replacement, said Melissa Clow, special projects administrator with Iowa City’s engineering division.

A 2010 study of the bridge detailed cracked pavement on the deck and severe corrosion, Clow said.

“Other than that, it’s too narrow for the traffic volume that uses it,” she said.

The $930,000 project — 80 percent of which will be reimbursed to the city through the federal Highway Bridge Program — will replace the existing two-lane structure with a widened bridge to match the existing street width with sidewalks on the north and south sides of the bridge.
