It’s one of a handful of similar findings officials are using to fuel support for a new $39 million justice center that would house the county jail and courthouse, buildings they argue are inefficient, costly and unsafe.

“We’re lucky that an incident hasn’t taken place that is so catastrophic that it would knock our socks off into the litigation and the costs associated with that, versus the cost of building a new jail,” Johnson County Supervisor Terrence Neuzil said. “We’re very lucky we haven’t had a catastrophic situation which would involve being sued to a point where $39 million would look very small.”
