In the days after the Nov. 1, 1991, shooting on the University of Iowa campus that left six dead and one woman a quadriplegic, Staley and her colleagues at the University Counseling Service had to help everyone make sense of it all and try to move on.

“That was a turning point, because before that time, we had not been asked to do a crisis debriefing,” Staley said. “We had not been asked to do a death debriefing in the years I’d been there. That’s where I’d learned how to do crisis work.”
