Iowa City resident Gary Sanders is attempting to join in on the lawsuit against the city of Iowa City by the Coalition Against the Shadow organization the opposes the building of the 21-story Chauncey building at the intersection of College and Gilbert Streets. The City is arguing that Sanders' lawsuit is redundant, so they should not have to take on both parties. Sanders and his lawyer, of course, disagree.

Mitchell Schmidt of the Press-Citizen writes that the city of Coralville may seek an adviser to help them recover after a credit rating downgrade earlier this year.

Kristen East of the Daily Iowan writes that the Iowa City City Council will consider an ordinance reducing a 500-foot rule that was originally enacted by the council to prevent so many bars from opening adjacently to each other, but is now inadvertently limiting business outside the intended area.

Quentin Misiag of the Daily Iowan gives an update on year three of the Benchmarks downtown bench painting program.

Sanders and his lawyer, Wally Taylor, however, say the move amounts to the city trying to quash the voice of a citizen opposing the Chauncey, which if built to current plans would become Iowa City’s tallest building.

“It’s sort of the attitude they always have: You don’t dare challenge the city,” Taylor said.

The Iowa City Council, which is the defendant, is asking the court to deny Sanders’ motion to join the initial lawsuit as an intervenor, saying in court documents that Sanders’ rights are adequately represented by the coalition in its lawsuit against the council.
