Johnson County’s first substantial rainfall in weeks came less like a gentle shower and more like a punch in the gut.

The area was pounded Saturday afternoon with hard rain and strong wind gusts as about 1.8 inches of rain fell on Iowa City in a little more than an hour’s time.

“It is certainly very heavy rainfall over a short period of time,” said Mike McClure, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in the Quad Cities. Areas farther north such as Cedar Rapids were hit much harder, McClure said.
