Longtime University of Iowa Music School Director Voxman Dies

Himie Voxman led the University of Iowa in Iowa City for 26 years.

A distinguished professor emeritus who led the university's music school for 26 years, died on Monday.

Himie Voxman was 99 years old. The university's Voxman Music Building, which was destroyed by the 2008 flood, bears his name. He lead the UI School of Music from 1954 to 1980.

According to UI, Voxman, who was born in Centerville in 1912, was well known as a music educator, for his wind instrument compositions and writings on wind instruments.

Voxman received multiple degrees from UI including a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering (1933) and a Master of Arts (1934). He joined the faculty in 1939.
