Artist Demonstrations during the Iowa Arts Festival

Several downtown businesses, including Iowa Artisans Gallery, Beadology Iowa, Lorenz 2.0, the Englert and Chait Galleries are hosting Artist Demonstrations during the Iowa Arts Festival, Saturday June 2 and Sunday June 3. The educational demonstrations will showcase artists at work as well as the work that they produce and will take place in booths mixed in with exhibiting artist booths during the Art Fair.

On Saturday June 2, Iowa Artisans Gallery hosts wood turners Quad Cities Steve Sinner & Joe Meirhaghe from 10-4pm. Sinner & Meirhaeghe work on a portable lathe and enjoy interacting with the public. Sinner has exhibited his large scale, one-of-a-kind vessels nationally, including at SOFA, and both men work collaboratively on pieces displayed at the Gallery. On Sunday June 3 from 10-11:30am, Astrid Bennett, a local textile artist and teacher who exhibits nationally, demonstrates Painting on Fabric. Beppie Weiss demonstrates Plein-Air Painting (12-1:30pm) and Debora Stewart follows Weiss with Abstract Pastel Painting (2-3:30pm). Weiss is an Iowa City artist and arts advocate, and Stewart is an award-winning pastel artist from Clinton. She exhibits and teaches nationally.

Beadology Iowa features demonstrations of lampworking and glassblowing. Wendy Ford is a local lampworker who teaches lampworking at Beadology Iowa.   Karen Kubby is the co-owner of Beadology Iowa and a lampworking instructor.  Benjamin Revis is the University of Iowa's scientific glassblower. Beadology also sponsors bracelet-making inside the store as a family-oriented activity for a minimal charge, available on Saturday and Sunday from noon to 4pm.

Lorenz 2.0 sponsors demonstrations by eight artists working with jewelry or accessories, including two sessions for children. On Friday, June 1, 5-8pm, Dusty Larson demos button making. (Bring your own picture or cut one out of a magazine, 1” diameter.). On Saturday June 2, at 10am, Rachael Ayers-Arnone (Ad Bites) does a Bracelet demo with kids. At 11:30am, Jai Louise Westgard (Symbolic Stone Jewelry) demonstrates how to make a pendulum through wire wrap. At 1pm, Tara Bryant (Astara Photography and Design) will show how to turn miscellaneous items into playful hair accessories and jewelry. At 2:30pm, Donna Duncan (Metamorphis Arts) demonstrates how to place domed glass over art imagery on metallic backings to create pendants and earrings. This method can also be used for photographs of personal family images. Photo editing process will also be discussed. At 4pm Cindy Burr (Bellerina Creations) demonstrates how to make jewelry organizers.

Also at Lorenz 2.0, on Sunday, June 3, 10am, Amy Kubas (Vintage Reclaim) demonstrates T-shirt bracelet-making. At  11:30am, Emily Goldsmith will have supplies so that kids can make their own bracelets out of old buttons. At 2:30pm, Joyce Barker (JAZB Creations) will teach people how to do simple bead wrapping to make their own Earring charms plus will have her awareness bracelet kickoff.


The Englert hosts several book authors. Janet Burrroway, author of the Perfect Pig, which is being presented June 2 at the Englert, will be showing her book with associated activities for kids. In addition, Josh Carroll, the author of The Englert Theatre: An Illustrated Century, and Katy Castronovo, illustrator of a series of science books for pre-school age readers will be presenting their books.  All authors will be present, have kids activities on hand and the books will be available for sale.

SATURDAY JUNE 2
Iowa Artisans Gallery booth: 10am – 4pm: Steve Sinner & Joe Meirhaeghe: Wood-Turning. Lorenz 2.0 booth: 2:30pm / Donna Duncan (Metamorphis Arts) is an artist who works both as a jewelry designer and a fine artist. She will demonstrate how to place domed glass over art imagery on metallic backings to create pendants and earrings. This method can also be used for photographs of personal family images, as well. She will discuss the process of editing the imagery in photo editing programs in preparation for the process, before the demonstration.
