New play set to be based on Southeast Iowa City

New York playwright Sean Lewis is in Iowa City writing a play about the Southeast side of Iowa City.

Sean Lewis, a 31-year-old New York City native, said he hopes Mayberry — a play focused on the southeast side of Iowa City — can spark a deeper conversation exploring how an influx of a new population to an area affects a city.

The concept for Mayberry originated about a year ago, shortly after Lewis moved back to Iowa City. Currently, Lewis is exploring the concept of using residents real-life experiences as the backbone of his production.

“The goal is for it to be fun and a celebration, but also a serious conversation,” he said.
