Meet Maurice the Leaping Terrier Mix, Iowa City Patch's Adopt this Pet of the Week (Adopted)

Every week, Iowa City will features an animal from the Iowa City Animal Care and Adoption Shelter that is in need of a good home. In this week's installment, meet Maurice, a bouncy terrier that loves to learn.

Liz Ford, animal care technician as the Iowa City Animal Shelter, introduces us this week to Maurice the terrier. Ford says that Maurice, five-or-six years of age, came to the shelter as a stray and is a little nervous about certain kinds of touching, such as being sensitive about having his nails clipped. However, this can be trained away, and beyond this Maurice is a friendly intelligent dog full of energy and eager to learn. Ford said Maurice has shown an ability to both love exercise and to relax in his owner's arms, and this makes him a good fit for a variety of families, except for those with small children.

For more information on adopting Maurice, you can call the Animal Shelter at: (319) 356-5295. Or visit the shelter at 4852 Sand Rd SE.

Maurice's Bio

Name Maurice Center ID 073937 Arrival Date 02/28/2013 Gender Male Neutered Yes Age 6 years Breed Chihuahua Description Black Kennel Trained Yes Estimated
Adult Weight 8 lbs. Compatible
with Dogs May do okay, can be quite nervous around other dogs, best with a slow introduction and supervision. Compatible
with Cats May do okay, is both a little curious about cats and also quite fearful of them. Recommend supervision initially and cats should always have an escape route. Compatible
with Children Over 10 years old - is not comfortable (is actually afraid of) a lot of touch/handling/restraint (hugs) Comments Maurice is a very sweet little guy, but he's very nervous when he first meets people. He gets even more nervous when he's handled for nail trims or other things and he will greatly benefit from an adopter who is willing to work on desensitizing him to these sort of things so they are not so scary. Maurice likes people and seeks reassurance when he is nervous by jumping up in a lap. He knows sit and likes treats. He shows some interest in toys but he's not brave enough yet to play with them. His true personality will shine once he's in a supportive and loving home.
