List of Iowa City and University of Iowa Closings Due to Friday's President Obama Visit

Setup and safety for Friday’s campaign visit by President Barack Obama, Vice President Joe Biden, first lady Michelle Obama, and Jill Biden will affect access to University of Iowa facilities Thursday–Friday, Sept. 6-7.

The event will be held Friday afternoon north of the Old Capitol, on the lawn area between Jessup and Macbride halls. Ticket holders will be admitted to the area starting around 1 p.m. Remarks by the president are slated to begin later in the day. (Click here to learn how to get free tickets to the event.)

A list of scheduled building and street closures follows:

Thursday, Sept. 6

• Lawn between Jessup Hall and Macbride Hall: This area will be closed starting at 8 a.m. and will remain closed through the end of the event Friday evening. Pedestrians are advised to cross Jefferson Street at Clinton or Madison streets rather than using the T. Anne Cleary Walkway crosswalk.
• MacBride Hall rooms 112, 116, and 117: These rooms will be closed starting at noon Thursday and continuing through the event Friday evening. Students and faculty with classes scheduled in these rooms will receive information about alternate locations.
• Jessup and Macbride halls: These buildings will close starting at 10 p.m. and continuing through the end of Friday's event.
• Jefferson Street: Jefferson Street will remain open on Thursday, but drivers are advised to seek alternate routes due to congestion in the area.

Friday, Sept. 7

• Pentacrest: Much of the Pentacrest—including all areas north of Schaeffer Hall and Maclean Hall, and the area east of Schaeffer Hall—will be closed starting at10 a.m. Pedestrians should use perimeter sidewalks along Clinton and Madison streets.
• Old Capitol, Jessup Hall, and Macbride Hall: These buildings will be closed all daythrough the end of the event Friday evening. Students, faculty, and staff who normally use these buildings will receive information about alternate class and work locations. The UI Museum of Natural History and the Old Capitol Museum will both be closed all day as a result.
• Schaeffer Hall and Maclean Hall: These buildings will close starting at 4 p.m. and continuing through the end of the event Friday evening. Students, faculty, and staff who normally use these buildings will receive information about alternate class and work locations.
• Calvin Hall and Gilmore Hall: Cleary Walkway and Jefferson Street entrances to these buildings will be closed starting at 10 a.m. All areas in these buildings will close starting at 4 p.m. and continuing through the end of the event Friday evening. Students, faculty, and staff who normally use these buildings will receive information about alternate class and work locations.
• Pappajohn Business Administration Building: The west entrance off the Cleary Walkway will be closed starting at 10 a.m. The south entrance off Jefferson Street will be closed around 4:30p.m. Market and Clinton street entrances will remain open.
• Iowa Memorial Union Parking Ramp: The ramp will be open for parking, but access to Cleary Walkway will be closed starting at 10 a.m. Drivers are advised to remove their cars by 4 p.m. to prevent any delays when leaving the ramp.
• North Campus Parking Ramp: The ramp will be open for parking. Drivers not attending the event should consider moving their cars by4 p.m. to prevent any delays when leaving the ramp.
• Trowbridge Hall: This Cleary Walkway entrance will remain open.
• Market and Jefferson streets: Blocks between Clinton and Madison streets will be closed starting at 8:30 a.m. They will reopen around 8:30 p.m.
• Clinton Street and Iowa Avenue: Clinton Street blocks between Jefferson and Washington streets will be closed starting at 10 a.m.The Iowa Avenue block between Clinton and Dubuque also will close starting at 10 a.m. Both streets will reopen soon after the event.

From the City of Iowa City

The City of Iowa City has announced street closures and changes to the transit schedule to accommodate the visit to Iowa City by President Barack Obama, Vice-President Joe Biden, Michelle Obama, and Jill Biden, on Friday, September 7. The Obama - Biden group will speak at a grassroots event on the lawn of Jessup Hall on the University of Iowa Pentacrest at approximately 5:30 p.m., although gates to the event will open around 1 p.m. The event is expected to draw thousands of people to the downtown Iowa City area in part because a simultaneous appearance by all four is rare, except during political conventions and inaugural events. 

The Iowa City Police Department advises drivers that the visit, which coincides with the annual Iowa - Iowa State football rivalry as well as the annual FryFest in Coralville, will heavily impact streets and traffic patterns in downtown Iowa City, but will also affect traffic throughout the Iowa City / Coralville / North Liberty corridor. Drivers who are not planning to attend the Obama-Biden event are encouraged to be out of the area by 4 p.m. to avoid delays, but those who are unable to do so are advised to plan ahead, expect traffic delays, and practice patience while traffic is rerouted during the event. 

IOWA CITY STREET CLOSURES:
Some streets in the downtown and campus area will be closed to prepare for the President's and Vice-President's visit, and will remain closed through the end of the event, which is anticipated to occur around 7 p.m. However, the Police Department warns that other street closures will take place that cannot be announced in advance, and other last-minute changes may occur with little or no advance notice. Some areas will also be closed to pedestrian traffic. 

Street closures that have been announced as are follows: At 8:30 a.m. on Friday, both Market and Jefferson Streets will be closed to vehicles between Clinton and Madison Streets, adjacent to the UI campus. Beginning at 10 a.m., Clinton Street (between Jefferson and Washington Streets), and Iowa Avenue (between Dubuque and Clinton Streets) will also be closed. The streets will remain closed until the event has concluded.

IOWA CITY TRANSIT CHANGES:
Changes will be made to Iowa City and Coralville bus schedules to accommodate street closures. Stops on some Iowa City bus routes will be inaccessible, and will therefore be closed throughout the day. 

The downtown transit interchange for the Iowa City and Coralville bus systems will be temporarily relocated to the Court Street Transportation Center at 380 S. Dubuque Street (the corner of Dubuque and Court) on Friday. This will be in effect all day, beginning at 5:45 a.m. Signs will be posted at stops that are impacted by this detour. Normal bus service schedules and use of the downtown interchange will resume Saturday morning. 

Riders who access information from Bongo regarding the time of bus arrivals and departures are forewarned that on Friday, this information will not be reliable due to detours, street closures, and traffic. However, the map that appears on the Bongo website at www.ebongo.org and on the City's webpage at www.icgov.org/transit that tracks the location of Iowa City buses will be accurate.

The following Iowa City bus stops will be closed on Friday. Riders will not be able to be picked up or dropped off at these locations. The list below includes the names of the routes, stop numbers, and locations that will be impacted. Normal service will resume on Saturday.
