Forbes Lists Iowa City Among Best Small Places for Business and Careers

Forbes magazine named Iowa City as No. 13 on its list of Best Small Places for Business and Careers. Iowa City is one of five Iowa communities on the list.


Iowa City is the leader of the pack among five great Iowa representatives on Forbes Magazine's list of Best Small Places for Business and Careers.

The magazine named Iowa City No. 13 on its list, leading the following five Iowa communities:

No. 13: Iowa City
No. 14: Dubuque
No. 15: Ames
No. 16: Waterloo
No. 29: Sioux City

Sioux Falls, SD tops the list followed by Fargo, ND; Manhatten, KS; Bismark, ND and College Station, TX make up the top five.

Iowa City' strongest asset is education, which scored No. 6 overall. Iowa City ranked No. 40 among communities in job growth and No. 40 in cost of doing business.

Iowa City is home to the Old Capitol building, a National Historic Landmark and tourist attraction in the center of the campus of the University of Iowa, as well as being an integral part of the university. The University of Iowa Art Museum and Plum Grove, the home of the first Governor of Iowa, are other tourist attractions. Cultural events that take place within the city include the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, the Summer of the Arts program, the Iowa Biennial Exhibition and Landlocked Film Festival. Local landmarks such as the Hancher Auditorium, Oakland Cemetery , Plum Grove Historic House and Moffitt cottages are also located within the city.
