City of Iowa City: What to do with Storm Debris, Fallen Tree Limbs, Etc.

Have some fallen branches in your yard from yesterday's storm? Here's how you can dispose of them.

City Media Release

The thunderstorms and winds that hit the Iowa City area over the weekend left numerous downed tree limbs and wood debris in their wake. The City of Iowa City reminds residents with curbside garbage pick-up service that woody yard waste, including tree limbs and brush, may be left at the curb for pick-up. Typically, tree limbs that are larger than four inches in diameter must be taken directly to the Landfill, but exceptions are now being made to assist residents in their post-storm clean-up efforts. No additional fees will be charged.

Wood waste, including brush, sticks, and smaller tree limbs that are four inches in diameter or less, should be securely tied in bundles that are no bigger around than 18 inches and no more than 48 inches in length. Larger tree limbs or trunks must be cut into sections that are no more than 48 inches long and do not weigh more than 50 pounds. The materials must be placed at the curb for pick-up. City crews are unable to go into yards to retrieve debris.

Residents of Iowa City, Johnson County, and other communities served by the Iowa City Landfill may also take limbs and wood debris directly to the Iowa City Landfill at 3900 Hebl Avenue SW, west of the City limits on Melrose Avenue / IWV Road. There are no size limitations on limbs or branches that are dropped off at the Landfill, and no disposal fees are charged. Landfill hours are Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m
