Days of operation: Monday through Saturday

 

Under direction, operates City buses to transport the general public safely to and from destinations on assigned route. Collects fares and ridership statistics for municipal and government reports. Provides customer service to passengers; answers questions and provides information. Operates bus in a safe manner through varying traffic and weather conditions in accordance with preset time schedules. Inspects vehicles for visible defects or hazards; reports driving hazards, malfunctions, defects or accidents to appropriate parties. Ensures correct fare is deposited in fare box; issues and receives transfers; sells twenty-four-hour passes. Maintains order on bus and calls supervisor when assistance is needed; resolves conflicts among passengers; practices tolerance, respect and patience with passengers and co-workers. Provides information to passengers concerning routes and transfers. Assists elderly and handicapped with special boarding and seating requirements, such as lift passengers. Completes and prepares fare box forms, defect/malfunction reports and accident reports. Responds to emergency substitution calls when required. Assists in on-route portion of training new drivers. Follows increased security measures, such as shutting off engine and removing key when exiting bus, periodic visual bus sweeps and notifying police when conditions warrant. May perform office duties including answering phone and providing information to general public. Performs all other related duties as assigned.

 

Minimum education, experience and certification

High school diploma or equivalent required. One year of experience in a position requiring extensive public relations skills required. One year of experience in mass transit operations or a related field preferred. Valid driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record required. Commercial driver’s license, type B with air brakes and passenger endorsement, is required upon completion of the training period. Pre-employment drug screen is required. Must pass background check. 

 

City of Iowa City application must be received by 5PM, Wednesday, March 19, 2014, in Human Resources, 410 E. Washington Street, Iowa City, Iowa 52240.
