Hey Iowa City. How about a little bit of art with your Friday night walk?
The Iowa City Gallery Walk group is holding the first of its gallery walks for 2012 tomorrow night, showcasing the working of local and regional artists at locations scattered throughout the downtown.
The gallery walk will run from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Benjamin Chait, owner of Chait Galleries, which is participating in the gallery walk, said the event has been going on for more than 20 years, and is a great way to support the art community in Iowa City.
"People look forward to it and enjoy it, it's opportunity to go out and see what's available," Chait said.
Chait said as much as half of the work has already been sold, but the goal is to allow the public to see it all as a complete collection.
Another gallery walk participant, Abigail Rusko, owner of Glassando, said another unique part of the walk is that the artists will be available to engage the public on their work.
"Definitely it's a great chance for people to talk to the artists, too, instead of just having the pieces there," Rusko said. "You can actually have a dialogue with the artists and see what they were thinking when they were working on pieces."
Rusko said the art generally will be available for display at all the participating sites for at least a month after the gallery walk. Participants pay $150 to pay for the marketing costs of the event.
