Indianapolis Man Accused of Attempting to Burglarize Iowa City Business with Marbles, Slingshot
The man, arrested this morning, told police that he had been shooting the marbles at area deer.
An Indianapolis man was arrested and charged with possession of burglary tools and third-degree attempted burglary, both aggravated misdemeanors, after police say he attempted to break into the Pharmacy Matters at 230 Scott Ct. using a slingshot and marbles.
According to an Iowa City criminal complaint, this morning at 2:05 a.m. officers responded to the above address for an alarm call involving broken glass. Once on the scene, an officer spotted Curtis Wayne Lewis, 56, of Indianapolis crossing the street away from the sight of the broken glass.
Lewis allegedly had plastic gloves on his hands and a surgical mask on his neck. He told the inquiring officer that he was from out of town and was going to return to Indiana the next day with a friend.
The officer then requested to see what was in Lewis' possession. According to a criminal complaint, Lewis had a pocket of marbles, a slingshot, a roll of garbage pags, a portable radio, a screwdriver and a crowbar.
Lewis said he had been shooting area deer with the slingshot and marbles, according to the complaint. A white marble was lodged into the glass of Pharmacy Matters building. Lewis allegedly told the officer that he did not believe the marble belonged to him, and did not hear or see anything suspicious in the area.
